Detention (2011): Detention is a very unique movie that is entirely meant to be unrealistic and completely all over the place. However, it possesses an interesting and entertaining plot (as long as you can keep up with it), a good performance from a spirited cast, and delivers a unique message that no movie I've seen has ever tried to portray before. So is this movie's obscene randomness a good thing or a bad thing??
In this movie, the plot focuses on a group of friends: Riley (Shanley Caswell), Clapton Davis (Josh Hutcherson), Sander Sanderson (Aaron David Johnson), and Ione (Spencer Locke). These four teens attend Grizzly Lake High, where a masked killer named Cinderhella, based on the killer in a fictional horror movie that exists within this movie, is terrorizing and killing the teens in the town. Riley is basically the social outcast and she is tormented by everyone and actually tries to kill herself several times throughout the movie.
She has a crush on Clapton who is dating Ione at the start of the movie. Ione's ex-boyfriend Billy (Parker Bagley) wants to fight Clapton because he still has feelings for Ione. And that's pretty much how the movie starts off.
The movie gets into action right away with one of the students being slaughtered by Cinderhella and from the opening scene on, this movie does prove to be entertaining and fun to watch. The first half of the movie focuses on the students being stalked and killed by Cinderhella, but the second half introduces a completely new subplot after the four main characters and six others are assigned to Saturday detention. This subplot, which I will not reveal as I don't want to spoil the movie, involves going back in time to solve the town of Grizzly Lake. So while the axe-wielding Cinderhella is ignored for a good amount of time, the movie still ends with everything coming together and being explained. All of the subplots fit together perfectly into the storyline for this movie. So, although switching from a killer to time travel seems entirely random and obnoxious and even hard to follow, it adds to the movie's glamour and keeps the viewer entertained.
The movie itself is intended to be silly and unrealistic, as can be gathered by the time travel subplot, and also, one of the students is part fly. How can you get anymore unrealistic than that? But as I said, the movie is enthralling nonetheless and everything that got put into it works very well into making it a good motion picture meant to appeal to the teenage audience specifically. The reason I say that is because throughout the movie, there is a lot of text that pops up on screen and I believe an adult audience would find this, along with the general language used in the movie to be quite annoying and obnoxious. The fact that it takes place in a high school with typical high school students even moreso hints at appealing to a teen audience. However, I still think adults should give it a try.
This movie does something very different than most- it tries to convey that the only way to change the past is to change the present. Most movies try to convey that the past cannot be changed, but this movie is different and it is this uniqueness that made me like it as much as I do.
In all, if you can accept the fact that this movie is meant to be unrealistic, random, and very funny, then give it a try. You might be surprised. Also, the kill scenes are pretty cool for those gore lovers out there!!
