DARK REMAINS (2005)
Well this thriller , directed by Brian Avenet-Bradley, gets right into the thick of things. The opening scenes detail the untimely and gruesome death of the main characters young daughter. Julie Pyke (Cheri Christian) and her husband, Allen Pyke (Greg Thompson) take a 6 month leave from their current location to relieve their grief, and work on their relationship. They choose a log cabin on a solitude mountain, with no neighbors for miles around, except for, you guessed it, the strange caretaker Jim Payne (Scott Hodges). As time progresses, slowly I might add, Julie begins to have supernatural experiences with some rather tattered sprits, including a few glimpses of her own daughter.
So what happens next??? Murder and Mayhem of course. Julie finds an old prison in the woods, which didn't actually have any relevance to the story except to add to the creepy nature of the scenes. Her husband Allyn finds her snooping through the prison and proceeds to try and stop her, for her own safety, of course. The unsettling little cabin turns out to have a history of killing it's renters from the past and Allyn decides he would like to leave before they become the next victims. But mother Julie refuses because her desire to be with her daughter's soul is unbearable. Julie quickly becomes unstable, and violent with Allyn. Things get rather interesting as the plot now unfolds with major relevance to James Payne, and his long dead mother Sarah. The ending will leave you surprised, and unfortunately sad.
The acting was so-so for Allyn and James, and really sad for the Sheriff Frank Hodges (Jeff Evans). Forunately the role of Julie was played perfectly, and completely believable. The movie has it's lighting issues, as some of the scenes are truly too dark, but it is not unbearable to watch. The plot was interesting and I have to say surprising in the end. I was not amazed by this film, but it was worth the watch.
